Pandemic Flu -- Are You Prepared?

Pandemic Flu -- Are You Prepared?

Yesterday at the Capitol, we were given a very informative presentation by authorities who track pandemic flu. Unlike seasonal flu, pandemic flu is caused by a new virus that no one has been exposed to. Flu shots may be unavailable at the beginning of such an epidemic until experts understand the virus and can develop large amounts of vaccine.

Although pandemic flu is not something we think about every day, evidence suggests that we need to begin to consider such a possibility and take steps to prepare for it.

Here are some simple steps you can take to prepare for a pandemic flu or any emergency.

__ Keep a first aid kit and extra prescription medications.

__ Keep on hand N-95 surgical masks and a supply of disposable latex gloves (available at Home Depot).

__ Make sure you have a cell phone in case electricity is out.

__ Keep extra toiletries on hand -- also baby food, formula and diapers.

__ Maintain an extra supply of canned foods and bottled water. Purchase an extra can of soup or other non-perishable food each time you go to the grocery store.

__ Develop an emergency plan with family and friends.

Because the younger population is most likely to be affected in the event of pandemic flu, it is crucial for children to be taught respiratory etiquette and hygiene, including:

  • Covering their coughs and sneezes with a tissue or their sleeve
  • Keeping their hands away from mouth, eyes and nose
  • Washing hands frequently, as viruses can be passed via doorknobs, desktops and even handshakes
  • Avoiding drinking from friends’ cups
  • Avoiding using dirty utensils

Stay healthy!
